What does a book editor look like?
Book editor. Let me guess--you're imagining a persnickety old lady, with librarian-style glasses perched atop her nose, sitting at an imposing desk and wielding a red pen, eager to mark up your book and tell you everything that's wrong with it. Right?
Nope.
I can't speak for all book editors, but I can tell you a bit about this one.

I'm the mom of three amazing humans. My desk is anything but imposing: it's covered by a laptop, a calendar filled with book deadlines and school activities, and sticky notes scrawled with inspiring quotes, to-do lists, and encouraging messages from the kids. My collection of red pens is interspersed with my Bible study highlighters and tape flags.
The kids and I laugh a lot. We love music, and I play flute in a local symphony and DFW-area wind ensemble. There's usually a song somewhere in our home; in fact, it woudn't be unusual to hear us all singing, humming, or even playing an instrument from different rooms. We're easily entertained by the antics of our three silly rescue dogs. We often invite friends and family over for meals and game nights. We love drinking coffee, playing all kinds of games, and solving murder mysteries and escape rooms together. We enjoy hanging out with people. (Believe it or not, there is such a thing as an extroverted editor!)
And I am unashamedly a book enthusiast.

My library is bulging with books I've worked on, books I've read, books I plan to read, books authors and publishers have sent me... oodles of books! (And that's not including all my e-books.) I have a lifelong passion for words and great writing. Books have shaped and transformed and enhanced my life, and I'm a tireless champion of the written word.
In other words, I love books the way a Texas high school coach loves football. |
I also love authors. I enjoy getting to hear their stories and passion for the messages God has given them. After more than three decades as a book editor, I'm still pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming giddy that I get to come alongside amazing authors and help them polish their books.
I love helping authors make good books great. That's my sweet spot.
Yes, I have decades of experience and plenty of credentials. If you're interested in that kind of thing:
* You can read my professional bio here.
* Find a few of the best-selling and award-winning books I've edited here.
* And check out what publishers and authors are saying about my work here.
But credentials, sales, awards, and endorsements aren't why I edit books. I do it because I love it. I'm convinced this is exactly how God has designed me to serve Him best.
Whether you're writing a novel, a devotional, an inspirational book, or your life story, I will help you envision the people you're writing for. Then I'll show you how to shape your words so they resonate in your readers' hearts and lives.
I will listen to you, catch your vision, and help you make your good book great.
And at the end of the process, it will be your book. My job is to help you become the best writer you can be. Your readers will see your passion and your message shining through each page--just clearer and more effective than ever! Then your book will have wings to soar wherever God opens the opportunity.
